The latest version of the AdsML Framework 3.5, release 2, was approved June 30 by the AdsML Consortium following a two month review and voting period. It is available at www.adsml.org. AdsML members and interested parties are encouraged to download the release and begin using it.
Features
AdsML Framework 3.5 has been in development for the past two years and represents a considerable advance over Framework 3.0. New and enhanced features include:
- The Framework now provides dedicated support for interactive advertisements across the entire AdsML lifecycle.
- A new specification, AdsML Media Pack, provides message formats for the exchange of rate cards and technical specifications.
- AdsML Materials now supports the transmission of advertisement components in addition to completed artwork.
- The entire Framework now provides support for multilingual textual metadata, meaning that instructions and descriptions can be conveyed in more than one language.
- Expanded set of Ad Codes.
This is the second release of Framework 3.5; an earlier version was made available for public review last June. Release 2 is fully compatible with Release 1 and builds on its capabilities. However, implementers should be aware that Framework 3.5 as a whole is not backwards compatible with Framework 3.0.

Status of this release
The AdsML Technical Working Group has approved this release for production use but the full Consortium membership has not yet voted. This release package was prepared for distribution to the membership as a basis for their vote. Because membership approval is anticipated, the package is also available for public download by any interested party. The voting period will close on or before 30 June 2010.

A new Proposed Specification of the Usage Rules & Guidelines for AdsML Media Pack 1.0 has been released for public review and comment. It is available here: AdsML Media Pack Usage Rules & Guidelines (PDF).
AdsML Media Pack is part of AdsML Framework 3.5, which was first released in June 2009. The specification provides a global standard for the exchange of advertising media packs, including rate cards and technical specifications for advertising offers. It relies on earlier experience and practices that have been embraced and extended in order to support current advertising business requirements. In addition, AdsML Media Pack has been designed with extensibility as an important objective in order to be able to grow with the business and support various business models and future requirements.
The new Media Pack usage documentation represents a significant upgrade to the usage guidelines that were contained in Release 1.
The next release of the AdsML Framework, which is scheduled to become available later this month, enhances the multi-currency support in Bookings messages by providing an optional Exchange Rate element at each location where a Currency can be specified. It will therefore be possible to indicate the exchange rate that was used to arrive at each price.
These new features are entirely optional and backwards compatible.
The next release of the Framework, which is scheduled for release later this month, will include guidance for how to use AdsML Bookings to convey the details of a digital outdoor advertisement.
This month the Technical Working Group completed Framework 3.5, Release 2.
The minutes of the April TWG meeting(s) can be found here: 2010-04-AdsML-Technical-WG-Meeting-Minutes
There are no more meetings planned this month. The next meeting will be in June:
- Thursday, 10 June – 09:30 NYC / 14:30 London / 15:30 Stockholm
We will use Skype for voice and DimDim for screen sharing. TWG members who wish to participate should tell Tony in advance and make sure he knows your Skype name so you can be included in the call.
The next release of the Framework, which is targeted for mid April, will include updates to the Ad Ticket panels to correct a number of small issues that have been reported by users.
Beginning with the next release of the AdsML Framework, which is targeted for mid April, users will be able to convey the duration of an advertisement using a dedicated “Duration” element. Until now it was necessary to use a user-defined property for this purpose. Duration can be expressed in any desired unit of measure: seconds, minutes, hours, etc. The Duration element will be available wherever it is currently possible to describe an advertisement’s size.
This new feature is entirely optional and backwards-compatible.
The next release of the Framework, which is targeted for mid April, will enable alternative versions of human-readable metadata (such as notes, comments, descriptions and instructions) to be transmitted in more than one language. For example, an organization in Switzerland will be able to include French, Italian and Swiss-German versions of an important instruction.
The new multi-lingual capabilities will be entirely optional and backwards-compatible.
